Werder Bremen Cancels US Tour Due to Trump Administration Policies

The anti-immigration policies of the Trump administration in the United States played a key role in the Werder Bremen’s decision to cancel its planned tour of the country. The announcement came from the club’s executive director, Klaus Filbry, during an interview with the German website DeichStube.

Filbry stated that “Two people were killed by state authorities in Minnesota. Playing in a city currently experiencing unrest and where shootings are occurring is not in line with our club’s values. This will not happen.” The incident occurred shortly after the death of Renne Good, an American citizen, who was also fatally shot.

The deaths took place amidst other violent events, including the arrest of a 5-year-old child and an encounter involving a Venezuelan citizen who was shot at. These events highlighted the broader tensions within the country at the time.

Following numerous protests and budgetary concerns, the US government announced in early February that it was withdrawing certain measures. “It’s no longer clear which players can enter the United States due to the stricter entry requirements, which include the analysis of social media profiles over the past five years,” Filbry added.

Financial difficulties also contributed to the decision. Werder Bremen is currently ranked 16th in the German league and does not compete in any international competitions, beyond the national level. The club’s leadership determined that these factors created potential financial risks that needed to be addressed.

“The current situation makes planning difficult and could carry certain financial risks,” Filbry explained. The combination of political instability and internal challenges ultimately led to the difficult decision to alter the tour’s itinerary.
